The Michigan Works Summer Youth Employment Program is a 2009 summer effort through the American Recov-ery Reinvestment Act to employ qualified youths ages 14 – 24. The federal grant received by all Michigan Works agencies in Michigan provides the wages for the working youths.
“This project best illustrates the positive ripple effect that this grant has had in our community,” says Angie Barksdale, Michigan Works Program Supervisor. “The ARRA (American Recovery Reinvestment Act) grant pro-vides the funding for the wages of the youth who get placed at the various work sites. MacMedia in turn gets to extend its services to projects that normally wouldn’t get traction.”
Ten of the employed summer youths have been placed at MacMedia, the Holland-based non-profit media studio. Four of them comprise MacMedia’s morning shift of Summer Youth and six others comprise the afternoon shift, each group working on two separate projects.
Knowing they would have several youths available to complete a large project, MacMedia reached out to the community for organizations who could use their services. The Holland Civic Theatre took MacMedia up on its offer and asked if their still images from over the years could be scanned and archived. The morning shift of stu-dents became the official archivists of the Holland Civic Theatre.
The theatre will be celebrating its 50th anniversary next year and as part of its celebration would like to have all its photography archived electronically by decade, and posted to the internet.
“This {Summer Youth Employment Program} is such a great idea,” says Barb Pyle, Executive Director of MacMe-dia. “Having these kids here this summer has given us a great opportunity to increase the number of projects we’re doing, and to broaden their scope. We asked many organizations if there was a way we could help them or partner with them on a project. The Holland Civic Theatre project sounded very interesting, and they could defi-nitely use the help with archiving their photography.”
“I really like working here,” says Jehnissi R., 15, from Holland, “I’m learning a lot. I still volunteer at the Herrick Library, but I like being here because I get paid!”
Marchia Wirth, MacWIA Director oversees the schedules and projects of all students who work at MacMedia. “This really is a work environment. We set work standards just like any other workplace. When the kids come here they are given expectations and we hold them to those expectations. They need to be here on time, they can’t talk on their cell phone whenever they want to and they need to eat in the eating area, not at the computer. These are the kinds of things that develop soft skills that help prepare them for the working world.”
Zach Z., 15, from Zeeland says, “It’s hard to get up at 7:30 – it definitely takes getting used to! But I’m learning a new skill and it’s a good thing.”
They have so far scanned several thousand images from the Civic Theatre archives. “It feels like several hundred thousand!” says AJ L., 15, from Holland, “and I’m so tired of Cindrella!” Cinderella was a production in the 1970s, the images for which AJ was in charge of scanning, and of which there was an apparent proliferation. “But I like learning to use the equipment – that’s cool. And I like working with the people.”
All of the images are scanned and retouched using Adobe Photoshop and other imaging tools. Image retouching is a useful skill set. Cracks in physical photographs are erased, color is enhanced, and images are made sharper.
The students even went into the costume storage area and documented the array of costumes worn through the years.
Ultimately all of the images will be used by the Holland Civic Theatre to enhance its own image and showcase its rich community history during its gala celebrating its 50-year history, scheduled for April 2010.
“This project can be a little tedious, but it’s interesting,” says Yadah R., 15, from Holland. “I like getting paid and learning to use the equipment. If I weren’t here I’d just be at home not doing anything.”
Upon completion the Holland Civic Theatre will post these images to its web site, www.hollandcivictheatre.org as part of its celebration of 50-years.
