The last time I wrote, I was on my way out to plant the last tulip bulbs and of course the mytery bulbs that either were dropped and or were dug up by mistake or just misplaced. I always find a few bulbs that roll out of the package or I drop as I am heading out and I have a pot on the shelf in my garage called the loners. I can tell what they are but not the color. Who cares. The weather man was predicting snow starting late in the afternoon. I put on some heavy clothes to keep warm as the temperature was dropping.
I honestly thought the weather man said late afternoon, well, he was wrong. A few snowflakes started to fall around 2:30 pm. I was not expecting that but this was my last effort so I kept planting. By 4:00 pm the ground was getting white, my hair was starting to get wet enough that I had droplets of water dripping down my face. I was prepared because I had thought the hooded sweatshirt I was wearing under my jacket could just be pulled up if my ears got cold. I learned that the hard way a few years back. Metal freezes fast and pierced earings mostly are made with metal backings. Do not try to pull the back off even if your ears hurt when you get back in the house. Remember the story about trying to lick ice off the school windows and your tongue got stuck. Same problem with the metal backs. DO NOT DO IT. IT HURTS.
Things started going down hill from there. I pulled my hood over my head and got the shock of my life. All the snow collected in the hood and I felt like one of the coaches who get a bucket of water poured over them if they win. That is just plain nasty and cold. I had about two dozen bulbs left and could not see what I was doing and where to plant them. OK plan C as plan A and B did not work out. I found several baskets in my garage and put coffee filters on the bottom, poured (no that did not work, the potting soil was wet), I used my leather gloves and pulled handfuls of wet soil out of my pail, dumped them in the basket and planted three layers of bulbs, and covered them with soil and mulch. The next day I went back out and shoveled snow around the basket and on top to protect them.
In case you did not know you can leave plants and bulbs outside in their containers IF and only IF the plant will survive two zones below our level of zone 5. Some say we are zone 6 but I have had plants die if the tag says zone six. I guess it just depends on the plant and when the ground freezes.
I think there has to be a moral in this: don't wait until the last minute to finish planting. Ever since that fateful day, we have had no break in the weather. It has snowed every day for several weeks and it has been below the normal average of 37 degrees for this time of the year. I will let you know how that basket turns out. It just might be the most beautiful basket ever. Some mistakes can turn out for the good but I am not going to do it again.
