It is time to start putting your garden to sleep for the winter. Somehow, it just doesn't seem possible that September was one of the best summer???months in years. July was very cool, overcast, and felt more like fall than summer. Global Warming???
Buy a few mums to give your yard a boost. They come in many shapes and colors. I like the pompoms as they seem to jump out and show their tones and beauty. At the same time pick up a few ears of corn and maybe a few gourds. Make a wreath to hang on your door or even the front light post. It is easy to find a grapevine wreath to start with or try making one yourself. It doesn't matter what shape it turns out to be. If you start with two wire coat hangers you will not only have a good base to tie on your pine cones, corn, and small gourds but it will hold it's shape and all you have to do is start to fill in the spaces. I tried to dry some mushrooms that popped up in my yard and it worked out well. I inserted a small stick into the underside of the mushroom and hung it up to dry. This year they grew quite large due to the wet nights and cooler weather.
If you have any dried flowers from your garden such as yarrow, sage, or even hydrangea balls, get them out and start creating. Most craft stores have ribbon to finish off your creation. I tried tying a very small bird house in mine and it looked great, at least to me. You can find a assortment of small solar lights in either craft or hardware stores to give the wreath a warm glow.
Have fun creating as there are no rules to follow. We all have different likes and dislikes and none of us are perfect so go out and CREATE!
If any of you reading this have more ideas, please share them and we all can benefit. All it takes is a little imagination.
HAVE FUN!
