We had almost two inches of rain last night. If you can stand the bugs NOW is a good time to pull weeds. The ground is moist and they come out easy. If you need to do some transplanting now is a good time.

I am having a big change in my yard. I decided to get bids from three different companies to install underground sprinkling in one third of my property. One of the three sent me a quote four weeks after looking over my yard. Another was here and did a sketch but I did not hear from him at all. I realized my yard was not going to be easy to do because of all the berms and plants but I honestly thought contractors would get back to me ASAP. I thought someone would appreciate the work but maybe Zeeland has a better cash flow than the rest of the country. I am sick of hearing about the economy, all the doom and gloom. Let's focus on the positives.

With the cool weather and the rain most of us have found gardens that are thriving. Mine is growing fast. I noticed that many nurseries and stores have a lot of annuals left. Some stores have them marked down as much as half. If they are leggy prune them back and you will have color until frost. There is nothing that puts a smile on your face more than when you have at least one grouping of happy plants.

Many people have planted veggies this year. It won't be long before you be able to pick beans, strawberries, peas and later corn and tomatoes. I have seen some very nice looking strawberries. I looked for them in the local stores and can't find them. The only strawberries I see are grown in California and they are discounted. The farm markets and local growers have some of the largest and sweetest berries you can find. Michigan grown strawberries are so much better tasting. With all the rain we have had, the strawberries are some of the best in recent years. Make some jam, pies or have some home baked shortcake with the juicy strawberries on top. ENJOY!
