Pruning: Why, How, When

Do not know where the photo went.

Is your yard is looking a bit unruly after all the spring rain and storms? Grab a sharp pruning shears and clean things up a bit.
My favorite thing to prune is my arborvitaes and evergreens because it reminds me of years gone by. When I was a young teenager, my first job was shearing pines. Long, hot days shaping these beauties into what would be cut Christmas trees come Fall. Good memories!

Toads
Bufo spp.
— Toads are nocturnal — they sleep during the day and feed at night. One toad can eat as many as 50 to 100 insects at a time. That’s as many as 3,000 bugs per month! A toad’s diet includes mosquitoes and their larvae, flies, slugs and cutworms, to name just a few.

Bulbs

Submitted by garden lady on Sun, 05/22/2011 - 6:24pm.

As the tulips are winding down from their peak, resist the temptation to cut back the leaves. You can cut the bloom itself but not the leaves. In order for the tulip to survive for another season the bulb needs to restore itself for another year. The leaves may be just cut when they turn brown. That is the one problem with bulbs that most individuals do not like.  Place a pot of flowers in front of them or create another focal point, to draw the eye away from the bed of tulips to another area.

Perennial Plants of Current and Past Years

I found this list of all the award winners of the perennial plants of years dating back to 1991. Do you have any of these plants in your garden?  All of them are worth taking a good look at. They all are plants that are easy to grow. They all have different color and texture that look marvelous planted either with other plants or alone in a pot.

Here’s a list of the winners since 1991, the year they started the awards.

Ottawa Conservation Seedling Sale

Submitted by garden lady on Tue, 02/22/2011 - 1:53pm.

The Ottawa Conservation District will hold its annual tree seedling sale in April.  Many of the species they offer are native to Michigan.  Because they are young – 1-2 years mostly – and field grown they have very long tap roots just as they would in the wild.  Therefore they are not grafted onto stock like potted or b&b trees.

Groundhogs
Marmota monax

IDENTIFICATION — Punxsutawney Phil may be cute, but a wild groundhog in your garden can be a problem. Though dandelion greens, clover and grasses are some of their favorites, garden vegetables and fruits often disappear when these furry pests are around. Their enthusiastic burrowing can cause nearby plants to suffer, too.
